Empowering sustainable climate compatible cashew growth : Away4Africa, Proba and ePoch team up to turn cashew farming by carbon sequestration in Benin, West Africa, into a win-win for climate and community.
In Benin, the Cashew Captures Carbon Project, led by Away4Africa, is taking a new approach to sustainable cashew farming. By focusing on a productive and resilient production system of cashew farming, quantifying the biomass growth and carbon sequestration, the project aims to combine climate benefits with community well-being. The verification of farmer collected data by FarmerLink in combination with earth observations and methodology applied has been approved by the verifier ePoch. Based on validated references. Proba has issued high integrity certificates, for tradable voluntary carbon units. The carbon credits are obtained by the Dutch company Hollander Techniek, compensating an annual net emission of 1,600 tCO2. The carbon sequestration, realized by 600 cashew farmers, members of FENAPAB in Benin, sequester the carbon in 1,250 ha of cashew plantation, receiving an additional revenue of 9% on top of the cashew sales revenues. The Carbon Capture Chain collaboration between the parties Hollander Techniek – Away4Africa – FENAPAB is a long-term relation, ensuring the farmer to invest in sustainably performing and resilient cashew plantations, producing climate compatible cashews for the international market.
